Alphabet Soup: The new language of sexual and gender identity – February 27

In an exciting collaboration, LGBTQ Connection, PFLAG Napa, and Napa Valley CanDo present a free forum on our rapidly evolving understanding of sexual and gender identity and the language we use to describe it.

Location: Napa County Library, 580 Coombs St., Napa, CA
Directions to Napa County Library
Time: 6:00 – 8:00 pm

“CanDo has a two-fold mission,” says Karen Garcia, a CanDo founding and Core member. “We encourage positive community action through volunteerism. But we also create projects in response to what we perceive as unmet community needs.

“This forum grew out of the recognition that many members of CanDo felt challenged by the quickly changing concepts of sexual and gender identity. Not only that, we found ourselves at times stumbling over what to say and how to say it when describing this brave new world. When we spoke with friends in the larger community, we found that the problem was widespread.”

To address this need, CanDo sought out Ian Stanley, Program Director for LGBTQ Connection, and Eliseo Rivas, Program Coordinator. Rivas, says: “The Alphabet Soup Forum is for anyone who wants to engage the idea that there can be diverse genders and sexualities – more than straight or gay, more than man or woman.

“Sometimes, it seems that there are so many identities in the LGBTQ community, it becomes hard to find a
way to talk about this that makes sense. In fact, we believe that everyone, LGBTQ or not, would be better off by enhancing their understanding of sexuality and gender,” explains Ian Stanley.

PFLAG Napa, the forum’s third sponsor, promotes the health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) persons along with their families and friends through support, education, and advocacy.

Says Rosemarie Vertullo, President, “PFLAG Napa is proud to support this significant forum to educate the community on LGBTQ and gender identity. June is Pride month and it is an important time for us to reflect on our acceptance of our entire community and celebrate its diversity.”

FFI: Admission is free.
